Objective:

To serve as Scout Executive utilizing proven knowledge and skills to provide the best possible opportunity to deliver on the mission of Scouting and for youth to experience character development through high quality programs delivering the aims of Scouting.

Background:

Though working in a variety of professional Scouting positions developed proficiency in the following:

  • recruiting and cultivating district and council volunteers
  • providing leadership to major council events
  • facility planning and management
  • fiscal management
  • innovative fund raising
  • outdoor program
  • staff leadership

Selected Achievement:

  • As a finance director, gave leadership to growth in the following campaigns from 2001 through 2006:
  1. Product Sale – $400,000 to $486,736 net
  2. Family Friends of Scouting – $133,235 to $201,212
  3. Major Events – $246,300 to $287,621 in 2005.
  • In the role of professional advisor, provided leadership support to a nine council 100th Anniversary Camporee known as Campaganza. Goals for this event included recruiting a staff of 400, a major national act for the arena show, 10,000 participants and an operating budget that finished in the positive. All goals where achieved including a positive net balance of over $90,000 shared by the nine participating councils.
  • In current position as Director of Support Services, I give leadership to the operation of seven camps and three service centers including a Director of Camping, a Program Director and nine rangers/caretakers. Secured a $1,350,000 gift in 2015 for the renovation and expansion of a camp conference center. From 2009 through 2017 secured more than $2,000,000 in capital through timber contracts, property use licenses and natural gas leases.  In that same time, period secured more than $600,000 in capital grants.  Additionally, demonstrated fiscal stewardship by organizing an Insurance Committee and reviewing the council insurance coverage. Through that process, coverage increased and cost was reduced by more than $15,000 moving to a new carrier.  From 2009 through 2017 improved revenue from camp operations by $439,229.  (-$81,441 in 2008 to $357,788 in 2017)

Employment History:

Successful leadership has been demonstrated for program, finance and field service. Assignments include positions as District Executive, District Director, Field Director, Finance Director and Director of Support Service. The areas of success include professional leadership, council program support, facilities management, fundraising, membership growth, and volunteer development. While BSA employment history has been in the Pittsburgh, PA area, opportunities for professional growth and promotion had been available as demonstrated by varied assignments listed.

Director of Support Service- Achieved a positive net balance to the council budget from the total camping operation. Secured funding for capital improvements at camp facilities, most notably, major improvements to Camp Twin Echo including a new ranger house, total restoration of two lodges and a new kitchen in the program hall and a major expansion of the conference center at Camp Guyasuta.  Gave leadership to a council wide fall camporee with 2300 participants in the fall of 2011 and again in 2014.

Finance Director– Provided direct leadership to three events that netted over $250,000 in funding for council programs. Provided planning, support and direction to the council Family Friends of Scouting Campaign for 33% growth over six years. Responsibilities included development of the campaign materials. Guided to council product sale for six years to 18% growth.

Field DirectorSupervised Executives in five urban and suburban districts in Allegheny County. Provided direct leadership to three district directors and two senior district executives. In 1999, the field lead the council with 25 new crews organized 5.3%-unit growth overall. In the same year 4 of 5 districts attained winner circle.

District Director– Gave leadership to a district executive and finance growth from $30,977 to $74,768 in the three years in assignment.

Senior District ExecutiveIn 1993 provided the leadership to the Guyasuta District and was the first district in the council that year to exceed goals in finance, membership and unit growth. Prior to working for the Boy Scouts of America, worked a season as Ski Area Accounting Supervisor at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, Somerset PA.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from St. Vincent College

Personal:

Have been involved in community organizations including Rotary Club, Chambers of Commerce and coaching youth sports. Currently active in and on the finance committee at my church and on the Advisory Board of the Pittsburgh Technical College.
